Big Artspace

A New Creatve Heart for Girvan
CRAG Community Arts are looking to build a new space for the arts to
complement their existng premises the Wee School Artspace in Henrietta
Street, Girvan. The proposal is to purchase land and build a creatve makers
space and community store.
The need has been demonstrated by the increasing popularity, number of
attendants and success of the workshops in CRAG’s Wee School Artspace. The
Wee School does not have the facilities to allow CRAG to deliver its annual
programme of small-scale workshops and art projects whilst delivering the
large-scale events like the annual Festival of Light & Strandline which it is
renowned for.

Phase 1:
The constructon of a purpose-built agricultural building to functon as a
workshop and re-use store to contain a metal working, wood working and a
craft reuse store. This would allow CRAG community arts to continue the
development and delivery of important community events including the 21-
year-old lantern project the Carrick Light Festival and Strandline Hogmanay
illuminated Trail. The building to function as a workshop and storage space,
where the large-scale lanterns can be constructed and stored during assembly
and after assembly and use, creating a resource that allows work to be
recycled and stored for future use and be available for use by the wider
community.

Phase 2:
The introduction of new facilities and comminuity offerings covering:
Traditional craft facilities on site where qquipment would be provided and available to be used by the public in tutored workshops
which could include:
– A Black Smith’s Forge
– A Pottery including Kiln
– Heritage Weaving Looms
Community Re Use The Space would also allow the storage of equipment and materials used in community events and projects and
would also function as a re-use store for the storage and distribution of arts and crafts materials available to the public and community
groups.
Green Space Food for thought, allied to the development of the workshop facility is an outdoor green space that CRAG will develop to
provide opportunities for small scale community growing of vegetables traditional green crafts space and wildlife space promoting
health and wellbeing through active engagement with nature; This would include quiet spaces, growing areas, wildlife areas and craft
areas the purpose to reconnect people with nature and food producton through shared community projects.
